Ammann ARR 1585-2 Trench Roller Sets New Steering Standard

Ammann announces the launch of the ARR 1585-2, the latest addition to its new generation of skid-steer trench rollers.

“The machine stands out for its power, unique 360º on-the-sport turning and advanced remote control,” said Lukas Jakl, Product specialist at Ammann. “It can climb just about anywhere, turn in a circle and deliver compaction punch every step of the way.”

Enhanced Drive and Skid-steering Performance

The ARR 1585-2 sets a new benchmark in trench roller performance with its unique all-wheel drive and skid-steering system. Unlike traditional articulated steer trench rollers, the ARR 1585-2 is equipped with four independent drive motors – one for every drum side – that deliver unmatched power, traction, and manoeuvrability.

This innovative configuration enables 360° on-the-spot turning capability, which is similar to that of a compact skid-steer loader. The result: exceptional agility, especially in confined or hard-to-reach areas where traditional trench rollers struggle. Operators can make precise adjustments and turn effortlessly in tight spaces, significantly improving productivity and reducing the time spent on repositioning the machine.

Productivity

The machine’s centralized vibratory system, positioned between the drums, delivers uniform compaction. A high-performance, single-stage vibratory system generates powerful compaction output of 75kN with amplitude of 1,6mm (0,063 in). The system also provides consistent vibration frequency of 33Hz.

“Ultimately, the ARR 1585-2 achieves target compaction with fewer passes of the roller – saving time, reducing fuel use, and minimizing operating costs,” Jakl said.

A Slimmed Down Machine

Two working widths enable the roller to fit into tight spaces and work productively in open areas, too.

With a reduced base operating width of just 640 mm (25.2 in), the ARR 1585-2 fits easily into tight trenches and restricted areas. For larger or less constrained jobsites, optional drum extension kits expand the working width to 850 mm (33.5 in), increasing surface coverage and compaction output. This dual-width configuration allows operators to adapt quickly to changing site conditions.

Superior Traction and Climbing Performance

Traction is critical to ensuring optimal performance and success on the jobsite. That’s why the ARR 1585-2 is engineered with a robust four-motor drive system that delivers maximum traction and control across all terrains.

Another unique machine feature is its ability to reverse the rotation of the exciter. This advanced function plays a significant role in overcoming soft and muddy ground, steep gradients and other challenging terrains.

Whether navigating loose soil or sloped surfaces, the ARR 1585-2’s intelligent traction system ensures consistent, high-performance compaction that makes it the ideal solution for tough jobsite conditions.

“The results are impressive,” Jakl said. “The roller has gradeability of 30% and lateral stability of 25%.”

Operation from Safe Distance

The ergonomically friendly remote control is designed to maximize operator comfort and safety. All elements – such as joysticks, switches and indicators – are logically organized and easy to reach.

Machine control is intuitive and safe. It’s also easy to explain, which is a key benefit for those providing training to end-users, for those who rent the machine, and for less-skilled operators.

A highly visible LED panel provides the operator with essential information such as battery charge and the safe operating zone.

Safety is always the priority in trenching applications. Therefore, Ammann developed the safest and most technologically advanced remote-control system. It protects the operator, other workers and the machine itself. The system utilizes two main control signals: infrared and 3D-LF technology.

Infrared is among the most secure wireless signal transfers. It has been used on ARR Trench Roller controls for an extended period and with great success. With infrared, the machine and remote control must always be in direct visibility for the roller to operate. The machine automatically stops if there is an obstacle or a loss of direct visibility between the roller and the remote control.

3D-LF (Near-Field-Detection) antennas transmit signals in a 2-meter radius around the machine to create an active safety zone. The 2-meter zone ensures safe operation and stops the machine if the operator is inside this zone. The operator can deactivate the safety zone via remote control when working in particularly tight spaces or during machine loading.

Charging methods

The remote control is powered by an exchangeable battery that can be charged on-board or externally. For on-board charging, the remote is connected to the machine via a cable. Charging can be done while the machine is working. The battery also can be removed from the remote and charged externally.

A full charge lasts for at least 16 hours of intense machine operation. Other key features of the new ARR 1585-2 include:

  • An engine that meets EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier 4f emissions standards.

  • A fully welded frame for protection of components.

  • Hoods that shield powertrain components.

  • A shift from a mechanical throttle to electronic RPM control for precise load management and smoother operation.

  • A new water-cooled Kubota D1105 diesel engine that delivers 15.6 kW (21 HP) of reliable performance with thermal management, ensuring consistent engine performance – even in demanding conditions.

  • Hoods that open wide and toward the centre of the machine for improved access.

  • A water-cooled engine that reduces the volume of hydraulic oil required by 62% when compared to the previous generation.

Advanced compaction technology

Each Ammann ARR 1585-2 can utilize optional ACE (Ammann Compaction Expert) technology to increase productivity during the compaction process.

  • ACE is a proprietary, relative measuring device that provides continuous information about compaction levels and displays progress in real time.

  • ACE indicates when maximum compaction has been achieved. This prevents operators from making passes over materials that have already achieved compaction. The result is increased machine productivity and savings on fuel, labor and machine wear.

  • ACE also prevents overcompaction and the material damage it can cause.

  • The system quickly reacts to all surface changes and identifies double-jumping, which can damage the machine and materials.
