Ammann Addresses Changing Industry at bauma 2022
Roadbuilding businesses today must advance sustainability, improve connectivity – and increase productivity, too.
Ammann’s presence at bauma 2022 in Munich recognises this new world, which is reflected in the company’s show theme of, “Sustainability. Productivity. Connectivity.”
“That is not only our focus at bauma 2022, but our commitment on a daily basis,” said Hans-Christian Schneider, CEO of Ammann. “Our customers increasingly need products that are more sustainable. There also is an industry need for improved digital tools and connectivity between machines and the office. Our customers tell us they need advances in these areas without any drops in productivity. In fact, productivity is more essential than ever.”
Ammann will be at Booth FS.909 at the show, which is billed as the largest trade fair for mixing plants, roadbuilding machines and other construction technologies and equipment. The fair will run from 24-30 October.
“There is always a great deal of excitement around bauma,” Schneider said. “If possible, this particular show might be even more highly anticipated as it marks a return to a major in-person event. It will be our first chance to reconnect personally with many of our customers.”
The pillars of sustainability, connectivity and productivity are represented across the more than 100 products Ammann will display at the stand. Several new initiatives will also be highlighted at bauma 2022.
CONNECTIVITY
Ammann recently introduced ServiceLink, a digital telematic data management tool that provides customers with the information they want the most: machine location, battery status and operating hours. Data transfer is automatic and access to the information is only a click away.
Machine delivery and pickup logistics can be vastly improved. Maintenance, too, is more efficiently scheduled.
Ammann ServiceLink can be added to light and heavy compactors, pavers and other machines – whether they were produced by Ammann or another manufacturer. Key to the system is a new generation of hardware that ensures the essential data is available to customers in a reliable, affordable manner.
A heavy equipment version of ServiceLink offers additional functionalities, such as fuel consumption, operating data and more. The data management enables greater control over fleet health, utilisation, efficiency and productivity.
The optional Ammann Documentation System (ADS) records data that is measured by Ammann’s proprietary ACEforce or ACEpro Intelligent Compaction systems. The data then can be analysed to improve efficiency and quality control – and to save passes of the machine, the ultimate productivity gainer.
ADS tracks machine passes and compaction progress with GPS positioning. Each individual roller pass shows the achieved material stiffness (kB value), temperature, roller speed and effective amplitude and frequency. It also displays (and records) the date, time and place of the compaction – with accuracy up to 5 cm.
All recorded data can be exported for further analysis and reviewed on a mobile device, laptop or via an app.
Visitors to the Ammann booth at bauma 2022 can examine the as1 Argon View, a new user interface for the as1 Control System for asphalt- and concrete-mixing plants. The interface provides constant visual updates about production status. It is intuitive, making it easy for operators to leverage all the plant’s value and improve efficiency and productivity. It also helps operators stay focused and to easily track the entirety of the production process.
SUSTAINABILITY
This concept is intertwined throughout the Ammann product line, from the smallest rammers to the largest asphalt- and concrete-mixing plants – and everything in between.
ECOdrop, a sustainability initiative, starts by maximising engine efficiency, which reduces both emissions and fuel costs. It also involves reconfiguring key systems and components to reduce the operational fluids required to run them. This results in lower costs for both acquisition and disposal of the fluids. The initiative offers improved access to service points as well, making maintenance faster and preventing costly fluid spills.
A closer look at one specific product, the new Ammann ARS 70 Soil Compactor, highlights the key features and benefits. With ECOdrop, the ARS 70 has seen reductions of:
- 22% in fuel consumption
- 26% in the required hydraulic fluid
- 10% in the needed vibratory system fluid
eMISSION, an environmentally friendly solution, is integrated into new Ammann products. It starts with reduced emissions – and incorporates efficiency, productivity and lower maintenance demands that make jobsites greener and business owners more profitable.
- emissions reductions – Lowers levels of CO2 and other impurities
- efficiency improvement – Utilises digital technologies to enhance product performance and jobsite management
- electrification – Incorporates alternative power sources, including but not limited to electricity
PRODUCTIVITY
Ultimately, Ammann machines, services and technologies are about getting the job done – in a quick, cost-effective manner.
Ammann has released a new, highly advanced continuous compaction control system for soil and asphalt compactors. ACEpro takes the essential ingredients from previous products while adding lead-edge technologies.
ACEpro can be operated in an automatic mode, where amplitude and frequency are controlled and adjusted by the machine based on compaction targets, measurements and conditions. The adjustments improve efficiency and quality by sending optimal force into the ground.
Operators are able to monitor progress in real time and assess when compaction has been achieved. This knowledge eliminates unnecessary passes of the machine – and all the costs they bring in terms of fuel, machine wear and labour. ACEpro also prevents over compaction and the damage it can cause.
AMMANN PRODUCTS FEATURED AT BAUMA 2022
A variety of product lines and technologies will be represented at the fair. All have features that adhere to the theme of “Sustainability. Productivity. Connectivity.”
Asphalt-Mixing Plants
On display will be an Ammann burner; mixer; screen; the weighing and mixing level of an Ammann ABP HRT (High Recycling Technology) plant; and scale models of several plants. Demos of the advanced, proprietary as1 Control System will also be available.
Ammann offers a variety of plant after-sales services, which can be explored as well. That includes the use of augmented reality during plant maintenance and even installation.
Ammann is an industry leader in asphalt recycling solutions, and asphalt producers have a variety of choices to ensure there is an option that fits their needs.
The RAH100 recycling system is capable of producing mix up to 100% recycled materials. The quality of the recycled mix, which results from a gentle heating process, continues to impress customers.
Ammann offers additional systems, the RAH50 and RAH60 dryers, which have maximum usage of 50% and 60% RAP, respectively. The RAC system maxes out at 40% usage.
All Ammann recycling systems are able to produce high-quality mix with 100% virgin aggregate if so desired.
The use of alternative fuels is another meaningful win on the green front. Ammann utilises renewable energy sources or, in some cases, converts a waste product into fuel. This conserves natural resources and puts less pressure on landfills.
On the renewable front, a burner transforms wood dust, a material that is available from local sources, into fuel. The carbon dioxide released when burning wood is offset by the fact the tree consumed that amount of carbon dioxide during its life. Therefore, the emissions are carbon neutral.
The burner has proven effective and is utilised on a number of plants. It can be retrofitted as well.
Biofuels are another initative. They support climate protection and reduce dependency on mineral oil. Examples of these fuels are rapeseed and sugar cane. Tall oil, which is a waste product of sulphate cellulose production, can be used, too.
Ammann biofuel burners can utilise more traditional fuels such as natural gas, LPG, light and heavy oil and kerosene. This alleviates the concerns of customers who are hesitant to rely solely on newer fuels.
Ammann offers varied sound-suppression packages to meet customers’ needs. Some plant owners need to lower sound slightly, while others have to take more substantial measures. The efforts start with equipping burners with variable speed motor drives, which are much quieter, and stack silencers, which control exhaust noise. Ammann offers more and more sound-suppression options, all the way to cladding the entire plant.
Retrofits are a way to improve sustainability with existing plants – and to enhance productivity, too. Regulations are frequently updated for noise and dust emissions, sampling options, the production of foamed asphalt and the feeding of additives into mix. Acquiring a new plant would address these needs, but such a measure isn’t always practical.
Retrofitting, centred on improving an existing plant to meet the same standards as its newer counterparts, is a much more cost-effective approach. Ammann has a tried-and-tested retrofit process. It costs a small fraction as much as a new plant, and is available for asphalt-mixing products made by Ammann and other manufacturers.
Concrete-Mixing Plants
The CBS Elba 105 – 150 Elba Concrete-Mixing Plants have been redesigned based on common customer needs for flexibility and current market requirements. They can be acquired as either a skip plant or a conveyor belt plant. With an output capacity of 105 m³/h to 160 m³/h, the CBS mixing plant covers general needs.
The basic unit can be equipped with both the CEM-S single-shaft mixer and the CEM-T twin-shaft mixer and offers a compacted concrete output of 2 m³ to 3.5 m³ per batch. The CBS Elba, a modular construction, is easily transported and suitable for both stationary and foundation-free, mobile applications.
Optimised CBT Series Concrete-Mixing Plants are productive and easy to install. The ingenious folding mechanism of the base units of the CBT 60 SL Elba | CBT 105 – 150 TB Elba ensure short installation times as well as smooth and fast relocation. The plants can be installed on a simple concrete slab or compacted soil (ground pressure 250 KN/m²). Open-top containers make transport hassle-free.
The CBT 60 SL Elba is designed as a skip plant and can produce up to 60 m³/h of concrete. It is equipped with the proven CEM 1000 S Elba single-shaft mixer and an integrated linear bin for storing up to four aggregate components. Alternatively, it is possible to use the containerised linear bin CEL 25, where between two and eight aggregate components can be stored. The storage volume is between 50 m³ and 100 m³.
The CBT 105-150 TB Elba is designed as a conveyor belt plant and meets all performance expectations for common construction sites and mixing tasks. It is versatile and able to undertake a wide variety of applications thanks to sophisticated folding and collapsing mechanisms. Pre-installed assemblies enable quick commissioning.
The series is equipped with the Ammann Elba twin-shaft mixer. Feeding is via an inclined conveyor belt, and the aggregates are stored in the containerised linear bin with up to eight aggregate components and a volume of up to 100 m³. A simple concrete slab is sufficient for the installation of the plant. Alternatively, a linear bin with up to 12 aggregate components and a volume of 210 m³ can be used for plants with a lower frequency of site changes.
Ammann Elba has developed a Concrete Filling Station CFS 30 SL Elba that improves sustainability by enabling recycling companies to upgrade and refine the material.
The concrete filling station is a reliable, cost-effective approach for those in the recycling, landscaping and precast industries.
As with the large ready-mix concrete plants, all components are weighed and batched separately. The proven CEM 500 S Elba single-shaft mixer is used only for the actual mixing of the concrete. This makes high hourly outputs of 30 m³ possible. The process prevents material wear and helps vehicles load – and leave – quickly.
The four-fold pocket star is integrated in the basic version. Volume of 10 m³ permits the storage of four different types of aggregate, which are fed to the integrated aggregate weigher via separate metering gates. The functionally mounted cement weigher with two inlets facilitates the selection of suitable cement types.
The basis of the operation of the concrete filling station is the automatic control system. From the simple intuitively guided touch screen operation, expandable via QR code, card reader or chip, optionally extensive possibilities are available up to the documentation of the concrete production.
The CEM 60 S Elba Laboratory Mixer is a must for every concrete technologist who develops demanding concretes. The plant is used for everything from recycled concrete to SCC, UHPC and other specialties. Businesses appreciate the powerful design and consistent results. With 60 litres of usable capacity and an integrated frequency converter for variable mixer speed, the CEM 60 S is the right mixer for laboratory, test and development applications. Attached, large-dimensioned industrial rollers make the plants portable, too.
Light Compaction Equipment
Ammann’s light compaction equipment line up will be well represented at the stand. These products are known as the “Lightweight Champions” because of their compaction punch and willingness to take on the toughest jobsite conditions.
Common to all machines are reduced-vibration handles, intuitive operation, trouble-free control and minimal maintenance needs.
The new 3D Drive Compactor is a finalist for the bauma Innovation Award. It is the first vibratory plate on the market that can go in an arc, circle or turn on the spot.
The number of shafts has been doubled, from two to four. The shafts are newly arranged in an X shape.
The compactor features an e-drive for sustainability. A low centre of gravity and an electronic control system enable easy operation.
Ammann Rammers feature the best forward-movement in the industry, helping contractors in all applications work productively. The rammers are easy to use, so operators of all experience levels are able to perform productively. They are more comfortable, too, because of the reduced-vibration handle.
Ammann Vibratory Plate Compactors are ready for any situation. The product line includes forward-moving, reversible and hydrostatic plates. Weights range from a light 54 kg to a much heavier 825 kg – with many models in between.
All Ammann plates are simple to operate, making them ideal for rental fleets. They also are versatile, with an ability to easily adjust to varied applications. Many are available with diesel or petrol engines.
When it comes to production, some of these machines move as quickly and deliver compaction power similar to some ride on rollers. They are high climbers, too, with various models performing on grades as steep as 30 per cent.
Vanguard 160 petrol engines are available on Ammann APF 15/40, 15/50 and 20/50 Plate Compactors. The Vanguard engines feature a 3-in-1 control that, when put in the “stop” position, simultaneously shuts off both the engine ignition and fuel supply. This prevents the mixing of fuel and oil during transport – a top rental equipment issue, and a time-killer for small business owners, too.
Unnecessary oil changes – and the waste that goes with them – are eliminated, lowering ownership costs and reducing the environmental impact. In addition, equipment is ready to work when needed.
The 3.7-kW (5-hp), 169cc single-cylinder Vanguard engine offers additional cost advantages through extended service intervals that are considerably longer than industry standards. The Vanguard 160 engine, manufactured by Briggs & Stratton, was introduced to extend the petrol portfolio. Honda engines remain available.
A new steerable version of the Ammann ARW 65 Walk-Behind Roller will be on the stand for customer review. This version has a ±15° rotatable front drum that is controlled by a rocker switch on the driving lever. It will be the first steerable walk-behind roller in Europe, as all current models have two rigid drums.
Both steerable and non-steerable versions of the ARW 65, known as a 2-in-1 machine because it can work on soil or asphalt, now include an expanded display to provide more visual cues about machine performance; a water level indicator; and an hour counter that’s repositioned to be more visible.
Ammann Add-On Compactors fit on excavators, which use their reach to compact in hard-to-access places such as deep, narrow trenches and particularly steep grades. They also can deliver more power than most other compaction machines for such applications.
The Ammann ARR 1575 StV Trench Roller utilises a new remote control that further enhances operation and, ultimately, safety. A combination of infra-red and radio control boosts operator comfort and jobsite safety. Ammann trench rollers perform well in cohesive soil types, such as clays, that can be very difficult to compact.
The articulated ARR 1575 and rigid-frame ARR 1585 are able to overcome the high moisture content in clays through their extreme compaction energy and the kneading effect of their padfoot drums.
Heavy Compaction Equipment
Ammann Light Tandem Rollers have been enhanced for the latest environmental trends. They are excellent fits for contractors who rent the machines – and the rental houses that supply them.
Being introduced is the eARX 26-2, a technologically advanced machine and the world’s first light tandem roller with a completely electric power train. The first eMISSION machine in Ammann´s portfolio, it brings innovative and patented solutions for the power train and vibratory systems, which are fully powered by electric energy stored in the machine´s battery. The fast-charging, high-capacity battery leverages safe technology and sets new benchmarks in zero emission machine applications.
The eARX 26-2 provides easy operation and exceptional operator comfort, making it the best choice for small- to medium-sized jobsites – where emissions and performance matter. The machine is nearly maintenance-free because it lacks a combustion engine. The hydraulic system incorporates the ECOdrop philosophy, which extends machine life while delivering the lowest possible cost of ownership.
The all new ARX 10.1 StV is an addition to the portfolio, offering an entrance into the line of ride-on light tandem rollers. The easy-to-operate machine utilises a petrol engine and one-drum vibration for cost-effectiveness on small jobsites, where operators value comfort and productivity.
The ARX 12-2, ARX 16-2 and ARX 20-2 light tandem rollers retain their ability to work in-line or off-set, enabling compaction against curbs and other obstructions – and delivering productivity in more open spaces.
The ARX 23.1-2 Stage V, the ARX 23.1-2C Stage V, the ARX 26.1-2 Stage V and the ARX 26.1-2C Stage V feature a new Kubota engine that does not require any Engine After-Treatment Technology (EAT) to meet the latest EU Stage V/U.S. Tier 4f emission standards.
The Ammann machines also are popular because of an articulation joint that enables quick drum adjustment from in-line to off-set configurations and fully electronic drive levers for smooth starts and stops. A key improvement is effortless switching between drive modes, which can now be handled by the crew. Soft drive enables smooth, steady adjustments to directional changes – particularly important when working on asphalt. Hard drive responds quickly to directional changes. Panic stop idles the machine if the operator makes very sudden directional changes or significantly adjusts the travel lever position.
Ammann Heavy Tandem Rollers feature a new, symmetrical cab that integrates four ROPS posts directly in the main structure, not in the cab corners. The design makes the machines more compact while improving sight lines to drum surfaces and edges. The advanced operator station has integrated, centralised, easy-to-reach controls.
A new 10-inch touchscreen helps operators manage all machine functions simply, safely and quickly. This includes vibratory parameters, lights, and the Intelligent Compaction system. In addition to displaying machine functions, the monitor provides an overview of fluid levels, indicators and machine status and warnings. The display is installed on an adjustable support, located in front of the operator, and moves with the seat for easy viewing.
Immediately noticeable on the new Ammann ARX 140 StV/T3 and ARX 160 StV/T3 Articulated Tandem Rollers is the absence of front and rear crossbeams. A new symmetrical cab that improves safety and productivity is among the key changes. Well-designed and positioned fuel and water tanks add to the impressive appearance and improve access to components. The 360º visibility from the operator station establishes a new market standard. The spacious cab is also extremely quiet. It is suspended and isolated from external heat, noise and vibration. Those features keep operators comfortable, fresh and focused.
The all-new ARP 75 StV is the latest addition to Ammann’s line of Pivot-Steer Tandem Rollers. The ARP 75 StV features the same advantages as its articulated counterparts. Operators appreciate the new symmetrical cab concept, with 360° visibility and advanced display. Serviceability is the focus of all Ammann products – including this new machine, with its easy access to all daily maintenance and Service points.
The new Ammann ARS 30 and ARS 50 Soil Compactors utilise innovative engineering and robust power trains to deliver high compaction output. These single-drum machines, with weights of 3 tonnes and 5 tonnes, are the most compact rollers in Ammann’s soil compaction product line.
The no-rear-axle concept enables a lower engine location that improves the centre of gravity – which enhances stability, even on slopes. The design also improves visibility and manoeuvrability. Those factors, combined with stability, promote jobsite safety.
An easy-to-reach adjustable operator seat optimises comfort, as does the fully vibration-isolated platform. All control switches are accessible and highly visible – essential for quick operator overview. A robust dashboard is highly durable, particularly important in open-platform models. A multi-functional control display is located on the main dashboard, making it easy for operators to monitor.
Customers will appreciate that the drums are designed to be maintenance-free as part of Ammann’s ECOdrop philosophy. This advantage significantly reduces the cost of ownership and makes the machines more environmentally friendly.
The Ammann Pneumatic Roller line has a new addition: the ART 240 StV. It features a new engine that meets the latest European and U.S. emission standards. A robust mechanical drive solution, unique to the market, extends machine life and lowers ownership costs. A ballasting system can be adjusted from 9 tonnes to 24 tonnes, ensuring the perfect fit for the jobsite. A spacious cab and intuitive machine operation contribute to productivity and jobsite safety.
Pavers
Variety is prevalent throughout the Ammann Paver lineup. The working width of pavers ranges from 250 mm to 14 metres.
The scope of technology available on Ammann pavers means customers can choose the option that best fits their needs. Conventional controls offer simplicity and high quality. Premium pavers feature PaveManager, a technologically advanced, automated HMI system that gives operators permanent feedback about the paving project to enable real-time adjustments.
The Ammann AFW 150-2 Mini Paver continues to grow in popularity. Contractors placing asphalt by hand find it difficult to reach goals for quality and appearance when working on bike paths, walking trails and other narrow applications. Such objectives can always be met with the Ammann mini paver.
The AFW 150-2 is a true paver – a mechanical machine – that works at extremely narrow widths, from 250 mm to 1650 mm. It leaves behind a mat that has the appearance and quality of asphalt placed by a large machine. It also represents a significant upgrade over manual paving in terms of labour.
